I High schooler experiences NASA program’ James Crutchfield of Duncanville High School was one of . 295 high school juniors fromi across Texas who spent one; week this summer at NASAI Johnson Space Center (JSC) in. Houston.Crutchfield applied and was nominated by State Sen. RoyceWest to participate in this unique educational experience where selected students are challenged to complete 10 web-based assignments during the school year and travel to JSC in the summer to explore options for sending humans to Mars.During his week-long experience at JamesJSC, Crutchfield Crutchfield toured JSC facilities, attended briefings by noted NASA employees - including astronauts - and worked with a team to design a mission to Mars. Crutchfield and his teammates concluded their experience by presenting their proposal at a luncheon to members of the Texas Legislature, RotaryNASA, Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, JSC senior management, and most importantly, their parents.The state of Texas, in partnership with JSC and the Texas educational community developed High School Aerospace Scholars in 1999 to encourage more students to pursue studies and careers in the science, engineering and mathematics areas.
