Warren Times-Mirror and Observer, Friday, October 5, 1973Late Start Members Tour Warren ChurchesMonday was a day of enrichment for members of the Sheffield Late Start group. They toured, under the auspices of Geoffrey and Marjorie Howard, three churches of differing denominations in Warren. The tour was designed to give the members an appreciation and understanding of the physical plants of the churches, and an explanation of the relationship of the appointments within each to the(iolden I geThe Golden Age Society of Sheffield, Clarendon and Mead Township will meat at 1 p.m.Tuesday, Oct. 9 at St. Paul Center, Saybrook.practice of the faiths of the congregations. Garter and tour members prepare to enter HolyRedeemer Church on Pennsylvania ave. e. in Warren. The tour, said Rev. Carter, “was very illuminating.” It gave the members a chance to see churches that, in the normal course of events, they would seldom, if ever, enter, and to discover the similarities as well as the differences between the approaches of the various religions to the worship of God. They had a light bow that was used by horsemen for rapid fire; and a heavy siege bow reinforced with horn or steel. They even had three different sizes of arrows to be used in battle as circumstances dictated. The crucial role of the archer in battle came into its own when the English developed the famous longbow, made of yew, and the cloth-yard shaft Each archer was equipped with a bow that equaled in length the archer’s reach with both arms outstretched The standard practice range for the English longbowman was 220 yards At this distance the longbow was extremely accurate Arrows could be sent twice as far But misses were frequent at that140 Students Pass Hunter Safety Coursedistance. So important was the longbow in battle that by royal decree every Englishman was required to iearn to shoot with bow and arrowIt is against the law to hunt with crossbow in Pennsylvania. They were developed in Europe, and were better suited to the defense of castles and in siegecraft. They certainly have no place today in the Pennsylvania forests. The Battle of Crecy, in Normandy in 1346. proved the superiority of the English longbow over the crossbow The battle opened with 6.000 Genoese crossbowmen pitted against 1 1.000 English longbowmen The Egnlish sent six arrows for every crossbow bolt received Such was the striking power of the EnglishSaturday, Sept. 22 was graduation day for 140 students who passed the annual Hunter Safety Course held at Sheffield Rod and Gun Club.Bob Newman, a certified National Rifle Association instructor, conducted the course which consisted of classroom instruction on proper gun handling, types of ammunition, sportsmanship and game laws.
