VOL. VII—NO. 191 __ _ _ . *Rex Ingram Sentenced To 18 Month in PrisonThe sentencing yesterday of Hex Ingram to 18 months in prison for violating the Mann Act brings to mind the hectic days of the veteran actor. The 54-year actor was sentenced by a federal judge in Kansas City for transporting a white girl across state lines to New York for immoral purposes. The Salina, Kansas, girl was only 15 years old. In addition to begin charged with violating the Mann Act the actor was also charged with sending the young girl a lewd letter thru the mail.Ingram, an immense character with a deep, belolwing voice, played “De Lawd” in the movie version of green pastures. He appeared in an innumerable number of films and plays. His last play was the ill-fated “St. Louis Woman.”Despite his great unpopularity among many people a great deal of sympathy was expressed for Ingram. As one person put it, Ingram would not have been bothered had his affair been with a Negro girl instead of a white girl.Personally tho Ingram is disliked for his pompous, strutting, conceited manner. He is one of a group of prima donnas who feel the whole world is obliged to bow down before them. He is in company with the Nicholas Brothers, Una Mae Carlisle and others of that stripe. In the rehearsal of “St. Louis Woman” Ingram and the Nicholas Brothers antagonized the entire cast against Muriel Kahn who was surpassing them in performance. They finally made Miss Rahn break down after which she complained to Actor’s Equity. Actor’s Equity made Ingram and the dancers apoligize to Miss Rahn before the entire cast.As Daytonians know who saw such pictures as “Green Pastures” and “Dr. Cyclops” Ingram was a superior actor. Unfortunately, he was not quite smart enough to conduct his own affairs to his best interest. He should be a symbol for others who m ay be inclined to “go astray.”Wilberforce State vs Tuskegee FridayNot quite so fresh from their defeat at the hands of Southern University of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, the Wilberforce State College of Education and Industrial Arts football eleven is now making strenuous efforts to get in tip-top shape for its game against Tuskegee in Chicago this Friday night.Tho losing their first game 20-18, the Green Wave gave a good account of itself and really threw a scare into the last year’s national champs. The maulers from ’Force will enter this coming fray as favorites.A special train will carry the loyal followers of ’Force up to the city eulogized by Carl Sanburg. It will leave Thursday night from Xenia.DNAONschrepthetheonresAionwemaThThCuwitmomoCurojistuENIhelsormucoivolthelasteifildainE¥
