You can make them work and earn. The great industrial leaders of the world made their first start by saving a few dollars and investing wisely and at the right time in some new industry. That all the pictures you pay to see in your local theatres are produced outside of this Dominion. That Newfoundland pays the United States many thousands of Dollars per year for Motion Picture Films.A large number of assistants are today employed by the moving picture concerns in the production of their many films. Most of these employees are Americans, though a good many o? them are Canadians. Why should not the same field be opened up to talented Newfoundlanders? Think of the advantages of having a locally-operated moving-picture concern provide openings in an attractive profession in which Newfoundlanders can help win dividends for their fellow-countrymen.That the moving picture industry pays a larger dividend on the investment than any other industry. And, realizing this, are you satisfied? That in the United States today there are three hundred andthirteen companies making film plays sutd that up to a year ago there was not one successful producing company in Canada. Our Newfoundland scenery for variety, splendor and rugged beauty is second to none in the world and is certainly superior to anything to he found on the American Continent. We appear to have been especially favoured by a bounteous nature. Our great bays and our extensive lakes, with their broad waters and rugged cliifs, their forest clothing and their ficldg of verdure; our manifold spots rich in historic lore and legend and the many scenes so full of dramatic possibilities; the quiet splendor of our valleys and plains all tend to convince us that Newfoundland is an ideal field for the operations of a moving picture corporation. Besides, the public-spirited Newfoundlander should remember that moving-picture activities here will advertise very widely abroad the manifold attracts ns of the country, will result in the direction of tourist traffic to Newfoundland and will secure advantages innumerable topeople and to country. And realizing this, are you satisfied?$100X0 Invested in the Right Thing, at the Right Time, Will Earn MoreThan One Man Working For a Lifetime.right• ••••••••■••a •••••lt;••••••••••••• •Jay Gould said: “A hundred dollars invested in the right place at thtime will earn as much as one man steadily employed.” For instance:$100 invested in the original Gilette Safety Razor Co.. is now worth ..................$ 25,000(Providing for an annual income of over' $3,000.)$100 invested in Goodyear Tire Co., is worth.................... ......$100 in Bell Telephone Stock has returned. ^.....................................$100 invested in Goodrich Tires is worth .........$100 Invested in Cream of Wheat is worthJ.j._____$100 invested in Dunlop Tires is worth ......................$100 invested in Prest-O-Lite is worth......................................$100 invested in Burroughs’ Adding Machine Co., is worth$100 invested in Morgan Wright Tires is worth. .............$100 invested in National Cash Register Stock is worth......$100 invested in Welsbach Mantles is worth..........................(Taken from Peers’ and Moody’s Manuals.)Jas. A very similar lens was used, consequently the machines were very slow and an extremely bright light was necessary to get satisfactory results. At that stage in the development of the industry some of America’s oldest companies were organized and they located at Los Angeles, California, where it seldom rains and the sun is bright and hot the year round. But w'onderful progress has been made in the manufacturing of cameras and our Newfoundland climate, although more or less wet and cold for six months in each year, is now an ideal one for present day cinema photography. „The moving picture cameras as they are made today are capable of producing perfect pictures under lighting conditions, which a few years ago would have been considered impossible, and at Los Angeles at the present lime the bright, dazzzling sun, which was so necessary to the industry a few years ago, is now one of the disadvantages they have to cope with in their work there. They find it necessary, when making outdoor scenes (especially for close ups) to erect large screens to shield the actors from the glare of the sun, and when under certain conditions this-xis impractical they do most of their best work in the weak light of the very early morning and late in the afternoon,' / ■The newer American organizations, such as Famous Players, Gold-wyns and Lowes, Inc.. are all moving further north and are making theirpictures in New York and Boston. We here in Newfoundland have an opportunity to make pictures that are practically impossible for our Southern neighbors. Such pictures as require snow and ice and other winter scenery.1The motion picture industry is the miracle of modern business^ Almost over night it has developed to such tremendous proportions that today it ranks as one of the third largest commercial enterprises in the United States. It has been a wonderful tale of success. Everyone knows of the fortunes that have been made in an amazingly short time, and the surface has only been scratched. No one can estimate the wonderful future that awaits the motion picture business. Its stupendous development up to the present, however, will suggest the possibilities. In the United States approximately eight hundred million dollars are paid every year by people to see moving pictures.Sixteen million peopleevery day sit in rows in motion picture theatres’ f I iand watch the shiftfact and drama on thescreen. The Maritime Motion Picture Co. of CanadaLIMITED.JHeadquarters Sydney, Nova Scotia.
