Officer Keene Red Elk has resigned from the Delphi Police Department and will become a patrolman with the Purdue Police Department in West Lafayette. Red Elk started as a radio dispatcher and part-time officer in Delphi last November. He became a full-time officer and was the department’s DARE officer, Community Policing coordinator, and bike patrol officer, as well as serving in other police capacities. Red Elk previously served four years with the West Lafayette Police Department and three years with the Tippecanoe. County Sheriff's Department. His last day with the Delphi police force will be Friday, and his first day with the Purdue department will be Monday. Red Elk said Tuesday that he is making the change because of advantages to his family, including increases in pay and benefits. He said Purdue has a good, professional police department with full police powers and its own investigative division. He said the primary objective of the 38-man department is the safety and security of the Purdue students. Red Elk and his wife, Lisa, and their son and daughter will continue to live in Camden. He resigned from the Delphi Department Sept. 23. Chief of Police Larry Ives said Red Elk’s resignation was a surprise and a big disappointment. The department will be looking for another officer. Red Elk had been to DARE (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) School and was to teach the DARE classes this year at Hillcrest and Camden elementary schools and a new class at Carroll Elementary. Ives said the DARE classes, scheduled to start later this month, probably will be delayed. He said all officers are involved with the Community Policing program, so that program will continue, but a new coordinator will need to be named.
