A fired-up and determined band of Akron High Red Raiders capitalized on their one big break to score a 6 to 0 homecoming victory over the husky Cen tral Lyon High Lions in a Siouxland Con ference game played in a heavy downpour of rain on the soggy Akron field on Friday evening of last week. The lone score of the game came late in the first quarter when Akron’s Marlin Harris blocked a Central Lyon punt and Joe Burdette scooped up the loose ball and scampered some 30 yards to cross the Lions' goal line. The end sweep try for the extra point was stopped just short of the goal one, and the scorer stood at 6 to 0. Central Lyon's only bid for a tie or possible victory came just a bit later when their speedy halfback, Randy Stange, broke away for a nice run to Akron's 10. On the next play their fullback, Terry Waagmeester, a stockily built power runner, crashed through the line to the Akron goal where he was tackled so hard he fumbled the ball into the end zone and Akron's Kirk Miller pounced on the ball for a touchback, giving the Raiders the ball on their 20-yard line, and that was the end of the real scoring threats. The remainder of the game was played mostly between the 30-yard stripes, al though Akron made a couple more scoring threats, only to be thwarted by tough de fensive play by the Lions on critical fourth down situations. The Akron boys showed occasiial flashes of offensive strength with several nice gains reeled off by Kevin Garvin and Doug Eskra, with the only pass com pletion of the game being an Eskra to Garvin toss that racked up a first down at one point in the second half. The Lions failed to complete a single pass. Key factors in Akron's victory were the superb punting job turned in by Bill Harvey and the aggressive play by Akron's defensive tmit, especially in the side. De spite a very wet and slippery ball, Harvey managed to get off several booming kicks that kept the Lions well back in their own territory the major part of the ball game. On defence the Raiders, despite difficult footing, managed to keep the Lions' vaunted running attack well in check, and hard tackles forced the Lion backs to make numerous fumbles that blunted their offensive efforts throughout most of the game. The slippery condition of the ball made passing next to impossible and also was a contributing factor to fumbles on the part of both teams. Defensive standouts for Akron included Tom Schneider, Kirk Miller, Kevin Garvin, Vance Philips, Bruce Ericson, Jerry Mc Thenna, Joel Easton and Marlin Harris. On offense Doug Eskra, at quarterback, turned in a masterful job of handling the slippery ball. Friday night's win jumped Akron's Siouxland standing to two wins and one loss, and leveled their record at 2 and 2 for the season thus far. On Friday evening of this week the Red Raiders take on the West Lyon Iligh Wildcats on the home field. Many of the boys remember the 44 to 6 pasting given them by the ‘Cats last fall, and are determined to make a much better showing in their meeting here on friday evening. Last week the 'Cats took a 32 to 6 drubbing at the hands of the powerful Maurice-Orange City High Dutchmen, and will come here trying to hit the comeback trail. This week's game shapes up lke a real humdinger, as those Akron boys for some more! Keep rollin', Red Raiders!
