W. D. Popham, assistant profes sor of landscape architecture at Iowa State college, returned to Ames to resume him teaching work, after a summer spent In the study of architecture at the Ecole Ameri cans des Beaux Arts in Fontaine bleau, France. Conditions for study are ideal at the school, Mr. Popham says, and the trips taken every weekend are of the greatest interest to the student of French art. The 130 Americans in the school are all ad vanced students, painters, archi tects or teachers, and the associa tions are invaluable. The work of the school includes the week-end trips and the famous chateau country, Chartres cathe dral, Versailles and Vaux-le-Vic — were among the places visit e Fontainebleau itselfes in a beautiful forest environment, and is a noted haunt of artists. Nearby Barbizon has given its name to a school of painters, which includes Corot, Rousseau and Millet. At the palace of Fontainebleau, one of the masterpieces of French archi tecture, Napoleon bade farewell to his men before his first exile, at Elba. Jacques Carlu, a noted modern architect, now professor of architec ture at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, is director of the school. George Gramont, author of important books on archi tecture and gardens, is a member of the staff. The school of music, the Conser vatoire Americain, is also in Fon tainebleau, and its 300 students and the Beaux Arts students share the same restaurant. Students of the Beaux Arts attend the free concerts of the Conservatoire and this sum mer heard Ravel, the great French composer, conducting his own works, Rabaud doing likewise, and heard concerts by Marcel Dupre, French master of the organ. The Beaux Arts school was foun ded by the late Lloyd Warren, a prominent American architect, and was also aided by his brother, Whitney Warren, architect of the new Louvain library. The French government also lends its support to the school, as the only Americans may study there. Before his return to the United States, Mr. Popham spent two weeks in England, visiting many places famous for gardens and architecture.
