Chase, who died as the result of an elevator accident at the Neil House, ■was the central figure in one of the most mysterious cases. He was treasurer of Meigs county in 1905 when $15,000 disappeared from the safe.He declared that two robbers had entered the office in broad daylight!and wane cue held him up with a revolver the other took the money from the safe, then locked him in the vault His story was believed for awhile, but he was later arrested and tried on the charge cC taking the money. A jury acquitted him. but the bondsmen had to make good the loss.
