Interesting Letter from Mr. HoshlnsonIloopeston, III., Sept. 25, 1002. Editors Herald :In ray former letters you got a brief description of this citv’s various industries. This treats more especially of the city itself, which is a mile square, with streets from 60 to 100 feet wide, about thirty feet in the center for about six miles being paved with brick and set in shade trees six to ten ^Jcel apart. Outside this are sidewalks ^rour feet wide paved with brick or cement. Most of the houses are set back from twenty to forty feet, and all the uncultivated space carpeted with bluegrass kept closely shorn with lawn mowers. There being no fences, the scene is one of rare beauty. Many beautiful flowers adorn the sidewalks. The college and three public school houses are three stories high. The flrst story of eaoh Is of cut stone, the second and third stories brick. There are nine churches—Methodist, Presbyterian, Christian, United Presbyterian, liaptist, Free Methodist, Unlversalist, Catholic and Christian Sclentlist. The flrst named four are massive structures of cut stone and brick, equaling the First M. E. church In your city. The others are handsome frames. The business blocks, hotels and several luassive dwellings are brick. All the others are frame and quite a lot of them are rich and costly. There is scarcely a mean bulld'ng in the city. There are four automobiles in town .and bicycles almost innumerable. There are horses from the fast trotter to Clydesdale draught, some of which weigh I TOO each, capable of draw'ng enormoi.s loadsThere being no intoxicanU allowed, the city, like Wavcross, is so quiet that caph day slt;-ems like Sunday. There are only three policemen, one for day and two for night. Rarely •either of them have anything to do.Have the closing of Waycross ever tried to raise bluegrass on their lawns«d in'their dooryardt? If gown now ckly, and well raked In. It will quite likely take and be a Joy forever. Sown now it will have time to get a start before the heated term begin*.In my next I shall -peak of roads and the method-of farming as conducted here- ' Love and best respects to all the dear people of Wavcross and Ticinlty. R. M. Hoskinsor.
