Oct. 3, 2002SportsIrvine World News/C9University: Defeats Woodbridge in battle for the Fence Post TrophyFrom / ClMike Schwartz/Irvine Would NewsWoodbridge's Dan Oermann gets past University's Tomas Gomez for some yardage during Friday's game.my O-linemen (Chad Smith, Danny Yoon, Danny Neudorf, Zane Hall, Jonathan Stevens and Will Gottbreht),Woodbridge still had one more chance to come back. The Warriors took over on their own 48-yard line with less than three minutes left. Kegel had several completions, which helped the Warriors drive to the Trojan 35.But Kendell Young intercepted a pass with 46 seconds left to end the Warriors' comeback bid.It was a great football game, both for the fans and for the players,” said Uni Coach Mark Cunningham. Neither team quit. Woodbridge's kids just had a whole lot of heart. I know they've had some trouble in the first couple of games, but they've got everything straightened out and they showed who they really are.The real Warriors showed up tonight. Thank God the Trojans showed up, too.I have to say what a fun high school game it was,” said Woodbridge Coach Rick Gibson. Both sides were evenly matched, it's just that they got the W.I thought that we played with a lot more emotion (than the previous two games) and we did a better job offensively. We just need to be able to stop the big play.Woodbridge had its share of big plays too.Senior running back Dan Oermann, who rushed for 185 yards on 20 carries, gave the Warriors a 7-0 lead when he broke loose for a 51-yard touchdown run with 6:45 left in the first quarter. However, the Trojans (2-1 overall) came back on their next possession to tie the game. Gerakos connected with Rickert on a 9-yard touchdown pass with 2:34 left in the first quarter to make it 7-6. The Trojans missed the two-point conversion attempt. The Warriors then went into their bag of tricks to take the lead. Kegel flipped the ball to Oermann on a halfback option. Oermann then connected with Kameron Niksefat for a 29-yard touchdown pass with 11:13 left in the second quarter to make it 13-6. The Warriors missed the point-after.University came back to tie the score, 13-13, when Koji Chavez scored a 1-yard touchdown run with 6:35 leftin the second quarter.Chavez put the Trojans ahead,20-13, with a 31-yard touchdown runwith 9:41 remaining in the third quarter. But Oermann's 24-yard touchdown run with 8:07 left in the period tied the game, 20-20.Besides scoring two touchdowns and throwing for one, Oermann was also in on 10 tackles, Gibson said.He was all over the field, Gibson said. He told me after the game, 'coach I could go another 20 carries.' He's an amazing young man.Kegel, the Woodbridge quarterback, completed 15-of-32 passes for 146 yards.University also got strong performances from receiver Tomas Gomez, who had five catches for 92 yards. Chavez rushed for 85 yards on 18 carries. But it was the steady play of Gerakos that lifted the Trojans, who trail the series, 11-9.Gerakos threw the ball accurately, we knew that coming in, said Gibson. He got hit multiple times and he hung in there and I respect that. My hat's off to him. He's our guy, said Cunningham. And we just have to protect him a little better than we've protected him. But he just did a tremendous job tonight. With the victory, University kept its hopes alive of sharing the Dennis Too-hey Fence Post Trophy. Irvine can clinch the title with a victory over Woodbridge on Oct. 18.However, if Woodbridge defeats Irvine, Woodbridge, University and Irvine would share the Fence Post. This week: Woodbridge (0-3) vs. El Toro (2-1), Friday, 7:30 p.m. at Trabuco Hills High and Salpointe, Ariz. vs. University (2-1), Friday, 7 p.m. at Irvine Stadium.
