By THE ASSOCIATED PRESSDUNKIRK, Ind. — Union employees at Indiana Glass Co. were voting today on a proposed three-year contract that would cut their wages 6 percent for one year and bring them back to their current wage in its final year.Union negotiators say a reduction in wages and benefits is necessary to save jobs.Negotiators for the plant and its three unions reached an agreement minutes after the company’s labor contracts expired at midnight Wednesday and voting began Thursday. The American Flint Glass Workers union said an outcome of the vote by members of three locals would be announced tonight. The proposal calls for 6 percent pay cuts for employees the first year, according to Local 107 President Hershel McCowan. The cut would lower the hourly pay to $8 an hour, said Way man Ward, president of Local 501. In the second year of the contract, 2% percent of the pay cut would be restored and the remaining percent of the wage concessions would be restored in the final year, Ward said. The contract also includes a major change in insurance benefits and minor changes in vacation policy and shift differential wages and would save Indiana Glass almost $3 million, Ward said.“The company is expected to save a quarter of a million dollars a year in insurance benefits alone, he said.Rejection of the contract because employees don’t like the initial pay cuts would result in fewer jobs, Ward added.“If they reject it, they’re going to lose jobs,” Ward said. “I’m not happy with the concessions my members are facing, but times are tough. To keep our jobs andlet the company invest, it’s necessary.”The plant, which employs about 600, is owned by Lancaster Colony Corp. of Columbus, Ohio. Both Ward and McCowan said they expected a close vote and that they would ask employees to continue working if the contract was rejectedIndiana Glass Co. is the nation’s third largest manufacturer of glass tableware. At its peak in 1979, the plant employed about 1,300 people. Besides the Dunkirk plant, Indiana Glass also operates a plant in Sapulpa, Okla.MOUNDS mallEAST OF J. C.
