The local sponsor is the Fayette-Clayton County TRAIN Committee. The public is invited to attend.A native-born American and U, S, citizen, Hilaire du Berrier knows personally most of the past and present rulers in Southeast Asia, and for more than thirty years has been reporting on affairs in the Orient. His wide andvaried background, and his on-the-spot interviews in Vietnam, haveled him to conclude that “TheVietoong could never defeat us onthe battlefield. But they mightconquer a nation--at ,the conference table.”Hilaire du Berrier has servedas Newsweek’s correspondent inShanghai and was a Far East sDec-ialist for the American OSS,But,his extensive knowledge is not merely based on journalistic observation. Prior to World War II, he piloted a courier plane between Hankow and Nanking, and operated underground radio stations for Free China, for which he was given a citation.On the morning of Pearl Harbor, Mr. du Berrier immediately joined a French resistance group that was responsible for saving the lives of many downed American Flyers. For his bravery and courage with this group, he received three awards from the Frenchgovernment.A year later, Hilaire du Berrier was arrested for espionage by the Japanese and spent three years in a prison camp. He still bears the marks of the tortures he underwent while the Japanese triedUunsuccessfully to force himto name his confederates.After VJ day in 1945, and because of his great familiarity with Asian affairs, particularly Vietnam, du Berrier was asked to serveas Far East specialist for the Office of Strategic Services. In1955, he accompanied the Vietnamese mission to the Big Fourconference in Geneva. Prominent sponsors of the Fayette-Clayton CountyTwo young women from this area have been elected to offices at the Area I Vocaftional-Techni-cal school at Calmar. They are Carol Lund, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Lund, Arlington, who was selected president of the Practical Nursing Student Organization, and Diane Kuhens, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Kuhens, Fayette, elected treasurer of the same organization.
