The Cellar Walls the Only Thing Left to Mark the Spot. The large and sightly residence known as the John Lowndes home steads at the corner of Crockett avenue’ and Main street at Five. Mile River, to gether with its contents were destroy ed by fire early yesterday morning. The fire was firstiscovered by a neighbor who lives in an adjournine house and an alarm was sounded, but the flames had gained such rapid head way any effort to save the building was futile, and it quickly burned to the ground, not even the cellar beams be ing spared. The building was constructed by Edgar Smith,a West Norwalk carpenter and is said to have cost $6,509. On the death of the owner, Mr. John Lowndes, Mr. O. E. Wilson was made decutor of the estate according to the terms of the will of the deceased. Last Wednesday, Mr. Wilson dis posed of the house to Mrs. Frank Stevens, the sum paid for it being $3,500. Mrs. Stevens is a daughter of the deceased and one of the heirs to the estate. When first discovered the fire seemed to be at the rear of the house and was no doubt of incendiary origin. In the building were the household belongings of the deceased, being the property of the heirs Mrs. Hiram Tay lor, Mrs. J. B. Raymond, Mrs. S. E. Dibble and Mrs. Frank Stevens. The latter who had owned the place but a few days had commenced to make improvements about the same which included repainting and paper hanging and expected to move into it next week. Her furniture which had escaped the fire at the McMahon fire on West ave nue some weeks since was in the build ing and suffered total destruction. There was an insurance of $4,000 on the building through the O. E. Wilson agency, the policies which were only renewed last Saturday. It is not thought that Mrs. Stevens will rebuild, at least not at present.
