n OUR FAIR WEEK.st Fourth Annual Exhibition of the Lake Prairie District Fair Association.Hundreds of Visitors Pres-jt , ent And Everybody enjoying the Pleasuresof Sight Seeing.s _n Tuesday morning last the District fairopened, which was the realization of n an all obsorbing topic for weeks past. i. The day opened with lovely weather, and the management with a large force g of assistants were at their places receiv-i ing exhibits and making entries in the various classes. The walk to the grounds is an improvement tnat was y needed and greatly appreciated by foot 1 passengers and those who so kindly remembered this part of the program has ■, the thanks of all, Arriving at the s grounds a new ticket office is another note worthy improvement as is also a goodly sized building for the Secretary’s t use as well as other officers of the orga-nazation. Ten new stables have been added to the stalls of last year to accommodate the demand this year.Y\ hile wo deeply regret that more of our merchants did not make exhibits, yet the display in every department is = very creditable and worthy of all that• can be said. The art hall is certainly a = gem of beauty, and decorater, Johnvan Maren has transformed its comely t walls into a tasty and pleasing appear-t* ance. Streamers consisting af flags of• every nation float from the dome of the I building to various quarters while theflag of our nation floats from the staff a over all. The building is 85 feet by 80 r and all the available space within is- taken and along the center merchants- have displayed their goods to good advantage. At the right in entering the. building. Messrs. Aikins and Stegeman a have a beautiful display of work execu-. ted on the ‘-New Home Sewing Ma-t chine,” showing the capabilities of this machine in the hands of an operator.I The display is a magniticient one. They ' have on exhibition a table machine, which is a convenient piece of furniture B as well as a useful machine. The machines have all necessary attachments for fine, ornamental and plain work,1 including a new patent buttonhole worker A. M. Howland is charge, with p Miss C. Stegeman as operator. A fine exhibit of pictures shown by John D. Gaass, is next in place and placards ‘ announce they are given away for cer-■ tain purchases at his store. H. Kuy-t per Son have a large show case filled ! with a fine display of china ware and fine table goods It is quite attract-; ive. Next is Messrs. Versteeg I bros who show the ‘‘White Sewing Ma-; chine, and have four machines with ; operators at each machine showing the fine work that can can be done with the needle nnd thread. P: H. Jordan of , Cedar Rapids traveling agent for eastern Iowa has one department for fine work; Miss Kauffman of Oskaloosa for 1 line etching and Miss Dena Boland ' shows the beauties of the arrosene at- ' tachment. In this department is a fine 1 display of fancy articles trimmed wifh 1 gold and silver braid, all the work of 1 the “White” and a skillful operator. Next we noticed a display of harness by Win. Kruger all his own work, and besides quite a variety of saddles, bridles robes etc. The next space is given up to the Singer Sewing Machine company which is in charge of their local agent Wm. van Houten. and he has on exhibition both the “Oscillator” and “Vibrator.” He iias fine samples of work at hand and his apartment is ornamented with various pictifres etc.Passiug over to the east side the boys and girls under 14 years old have a corner in which to display articles of their own make, comprising of paintings, needle work, fancy goods and most any article their deft fingers could make. Then comes the “Fancy Work” department in which is displayed a fine lot of needle work, crochet work and all the kinds fancy goods that the needle and thread cnu do. The display is well worthy of an extended notice with names, whioh are so numerous that our space forbids a full and complete notice. In the nortli east corner John van Maren has a display of his own painting which are nice and show to good advantage.
