The Greenback era.Yesterday afternoon about 4 o’clock the Greenbackers raised with much gusto a 125-foot pole in the commons just below the Maryland avenue school building and in the rear of the Queen City Hotel. Tbe pole is surmounted with a green flag having this device inscribed in white letters: “’Horace ltesley, for Congress.” Last rnglit a meeting was held at the pole, tbe platform being built around it. The Queen City Band was in attendance. The audience numbered several hundred people, with a sprinkling of Republicans, among whom were Hon. Henry VV. Hoffman and Mr. Charles Gilpin. 'J he meeting was organized wiih Dr. O. M.8chindeh, president; Mr. .Joseph Lloyd, vice-president, and Mr. Daniel Webster, secretary. Dr. Schindell in troduced the Congressional candidate, Colonel ltesley.He addressed the meeting for the space of an hour and three quarters, in which he dwelt, at more length on the fin mces than in his speech of Saturday last. At the close of Mr. Resley’s remarks Mr. John lleudley was called for and came forward amid cheers. Mr. Ilendiey spoke about three-fourths of an hour. His theme was, ‘‘God gave bread for all.” We leave old parlies because they enslave us. Both parlies are tangled up like wool on a sheep’s back. We have no papers to disseminata our cause; but ou' cause is right. With this intent they will shortly hu\e a grand and “glorious” rally at Westernport to lake the sting out of the alleged pernicious uttei ntces of Urner.
