Both St. Jude the Apostle and Holy Ghost notched victories on both lev els, Sunday, in the Catholic Grade School conference, although the Fly ing Js’ varsity had to come back with a late score and then work overtime to do it. The varsity pushed across a touch down during post-regulation play to drop St. Ann of Lansing, 13-7, while the Widgets romped to victory, 33-7. The Flames varsity also had to strug gle before getting passed Queen of Apostle, 21-6, but their Widgets also had an easy time, scoring a 35-12 win. In the St. Jude varsity contest, St. Ann took the early lead when Pat Eileen ran 24 yards off tackle. Sean Kennedy followed with a run for the one-point conversion to make it a 7-0 lead. THE SCORE, which came in the opening period, held up until the final quarter when St. Jude quarterback Terry Maloney found Doug Konecki alone in the St. Ann secondary and connected for a 25-yard scoring pass. The key extra-point try which tied the game and eventually sent it into overtime was made by Konecki on a run off-tackle. The winning score came on the second play of the overtime period and involved the same combination. With the ball on the eight yard line after a running play, Maloney hit Ko necki in the end zone for the TD. The try for conversion failed, giving the Flyings a six-point lead, but St. Ann had an opportunity to tie it and win it when it went on offense. However, the St. Jude defense stopped its opponents on downs to pick up the victory. The big credit for the victory goes to the defense, which held St. Ann scoreless after giving up the early touchdown. Playing an outstanding game were John Fitzgibbon, Pat Halaburt, Bobby Zdych and espe cially, Bobby Rodriguez. It was Rod riguez who stopped the St. Ann quar terback on an option play during the overtime that saved the victory. The offensive line also played well, in cluding Jim Wolf, Matt Knyz, Mike Panozzo, Bob Wauchop and John Ol son. THE WIDGETS, as the score indi cates, dominated the contest from the beginning. After Joe Stratton scored on a 14-yard running play, he tallied on a 20-yard pass from Flying s quarterback Matt Tennicott. The scoring continued when Kevin Hughes, an outstanding defensive player, ran 66 yards from scrimmage for another St. Jude tally. Tennicott’s pass to Stratton was good for the two-point conversion, giving the Fly ings a 20-0 lead at halftime. Stratton scored on a 26-yard run in the opening series of the second half, coach to increase the lead and Tony Sadlowski ran around right end for the conversion and a 27-0 advan tage. At that point, St. Jude coach Nick Gallo removed his starting lineup and let the second team finish the game. St. Jude’s second unit proved it can move the ball behind the blocking of Greg Keenan, Victor Curry, Joe Sim mons, Micah Pakowski, Mark Lyon, Matt Zdych and Pepe Arroyo. They helped second-stringer Joe Kostro break a 59-yard run for a touchdown to end the scoring. The St. Jude regulars, who rested most of the second half, included John Owens, Petter Ousley, Michael Leber, Brian Maher and Tennicott. Credit for the shutout goes to the defensive efforts of Hughes, Brian Courtney, Kevin Bekavac, Kevin Ziemkowski, Mike Horan, Ken Do zier, Mark Bekavac and Jeremy Stratton. THE FLAMES fell behind 6-0, but the defense held its ground after that. Mark Nardi got the Flames into a tie with a 45-yard run around the right side and down the sideline, go ing into the end zone untouched. Keith Sprehe kicked the extra point to give Holy Ghost an 8-6 lead. The lead was increased when Jim Thormeyer went over the goal on a one-yard sneak and Sprehe’s run. In the third quarter, the Flames contin ued to roll. Starting on their own 41 yard line, they moved the ball to the Queen of Apostle six yard line, pick ing up three first downs along the way. With third and goal at the six, Thormeyer found Kevin Sheridan all alone in the end zone and delivered the ball for the final score of the game. From that point on, with a 21-6 lead, the second string took over and finished out the game. Among the Standouts on the starting unit were Jason Thormeyer, Tim Paholke, Da mian St. Germaine, Ricky Munoz, Vince Leucado, John Kowalski and Paul Feichtinger, along with those who contributed to the scoring. ‘This was a team victory,” said coach Steve Salato. “Everyone had a hand in it.” THE HOLY GHOST Widgets scored in every quarter and in every way possible in streaking to their fourth straight victory. In what coach Jim McClelland termed a “diversifi cation scoring,” they used a “bomb,” a sneak and a dash around right end, a fumble recovery and even a safety to put points on the board. Like the varsity, the Widgets fell behind 6-0 before unleashing their at tack. The Flames came right back to tie the score on a 34-yard run around right end by Chris Danko and a pass from Wally Widelski to Danko gave them the lead, 8-6. The Flames added six more points on a sneak by Widelski to hold a 14-12 lead at half time. In the third quarter, a 45-yard touchdown “bomb” from Widelski to Jeff Winnick gave the Flame Widgets a 20-12 lead and a safety during the period increased the led to 22-12. With Bob Pociecha lugging the ball, Holy Ghost moved into scoring territory and Wicelski capped the drive with a three-yard plunge up the middle. Pociecha added the extra point on a run for a 29-12 advantage. The final score came when an alert J.J. Ramusack stripped the ball from a Queen of Apostle receiver and ran 20 yards for a touchdown. MUCH OF THE credit for the Flames’ victory go to running backs Mark Tillotson and Tim Sheridan, along with Danko and Pociecha and quarterback Widelski. The linemen included Chris Powell, Chris Mur dlakes, Pat McKenna, Kirk Gill and Joe Bolek. The defense was led by Tom Young, Chris Maravilla and Matt Tardy.
