The segregation problem which is causing news all over our country, has never been a problem in Ellicott-ville, because we do not have any negro citizens. In the past we have had a few fine negro famlies and we have one street named for a negro, Maybee alley, runs from Jefferson street to Mill street. For many years we had- the Sheffield family. Will Sheffield was one of the village barbers, his daughter played St. John’s church organ for many years and another daughter sang in the church choir, a son Fred was prominent in school basketball. Abe Maybee and sis- . ter Liz lived in a small house on Maybee alley. Abe was a civil war veteran and had been a slave. He was a picturesque old man with curly white hair. The boys of that era used to flock to Abe’s house after school and he woud regale them with vivid persohal experiences as a slave and a veteran while Liz always had a large crock of delicious cookies for us.
