NEW YORK, Oct. 2 (INS) If you will pardon a brief interruption of the baseball situation for a discourse on pugilism, the following will be presented. The International Boxing Club has announce^ that the Joe Louis-Rocky Marciano bout scheduled for the Polo Grounds Oct. 11 has been moved into Madison SquareGarden for Oct. 26.It is my own peculiar notion that the IBC had no intention of putting this bout on at the Polo Grounds in the first place. What they did was to schedule it as a big hullabaloo outdoor attraction later in the fall than any October match has ever been held before, with the intention of capitalizing on the psychology of moving it into the Garden. That psychology works two ways. First, a show scheduled for the Polo Grounds look like a big thing. Everybody gets hopped up about a thing like that barring an obvious mismatch. Secondly, moving it to Madison Square Garden mantes it more accessible to the public.Just to show you how bright I am about such things, I have been saying for 10 days that this show would never go into the Polo Grounds.Tony Galento, a beer-swilling fat man, nearly knocked Louis out fighting from a crouch in the days when Louis was good. Arturo Godoy gave Louis* trouble—and went the limit with him once— merely by. mauling and slugging.Tommy Farr made a close mate! with the Brown Bomber once, and others who came in bobbing anc tussling and brawling have showj up well.Marciano is young enough, tougl enough and hits hard enough tlt; take what is left of Louis and tlt; finally bring his career to a closeMarciano has IBC connection stronger than any other fighter iithe business. He is managed by the stepson of A1 Weill, Garden matchmaker, for the records.Weill told me not so long ago that when he accepted the job as Garden matchmaker it was understood that he could continue to control the destinies of Marciano. This leads to an. interesting situation. Marciano is beholden to Weill while Louis is a former official of the IBC and still closely linked with same.If that seems not to make sense you don’t know boxing around here. However, Marciano is on his way up and Louis on his way out. It might be a good fight and surely will be a tough one whether it ends quickly or goes along.Marciano should win ii.
