Pvt. Schumacher Of Piercy Given Bravery Citation The Silver Star decoration, for gallantry in action against the ene my has been awarded Pvt. Charles W. Schumacher, grandson of Mrs. Alta Louis of Piercy, who earned his decoration during fighting at Yongdong, Korea, July 25, as a member of the First U. S. Cavalry Division. The citation accompanying his decoration reads: “Private Charles W. Schumacher, Infantry, United States Army, a member of Com pany E, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, displayed gal lantry in action against the enemy at Yongdong, Korea, 25 July 1950. Company E, 8th Cavalry Regiment withdrawing through the rough mountainous terrain around Yong dong was stopped by an unexpect ed enemy-held road block consist ing of four machine gun positions. Private Schumacher, along with five other members of his squad, assaulted the enemy-held position at the top of the hill in the face of intense hostile machine gun fire. Although wounded in this assault, he continued the attack and with its comrades, succeeded in gaining the enemy position and destroying the four machine guns.”
