Frank Upman, Hotel Man Well Known in Chicago, Dies at His Home in Los Angeles.A special telegram to the National Hotel Reporter from Los Angeles, California, announces the death of Frank Upman, at his home in that city.The deceased was born in a hotel in Milwaukee, in 1852, of which his father was the proprietor. Leaving home, Frank started as a bell-boy in the old Tremont House at Lake and Dearborn streets, Chicago. In 1874 he went, with his father, to St. Paul, Minn., and was employed as chief clerk of the Gruber House, of which his father was the proprietor. A few years later Frank opened Upman’s Hotel in St. Paul, whichhe conducted a number of years with succcess, making considerable money there.In 1882, Frank Upman returned to Chicago and in conjunction with the late James D. Fanning purchased the lease and furniture of the Briggs House from Captain J. H. Cummings. Upman and Fanning were very successful in the Rriggs House, but after a few years the partnership was dissolved and Mr. Upman became the sole proprietor.
