HE THANKS THE GOVERNMENT. Grateful Letter from Mr. Nicho las Kennedy — He and His Family Rescued Through the Prompt Action of the Execu tive in Sending the “ Grand Lake” to Sleep Cove. (Editor Evening Telegram.) DEAR Str.— Please allow me space, through your very valuable paper, to publicly thank our Government for their prompt action in authorizing the Grand Lake to proceed to our rescue at Sloop Cove,Cape Harrison; and, also, to thank Captain Delaney, officers and crew for their great kindness in searching and caring for us,as well as those many kind friends who interested themselves in our behalf at home and along the journey By Sea and Land. Had it not been for our prompt rescue our sufferings would have been great to contemplate, as we were a family of eleven and one servant man, quite un provided to spend a winter in the far north. Our experience in crossing Byron Bay, which was by a circular route of about fifty miles, was something fear ful. The journey was made in An Open Boat, with Two others in Tow, one of which that contained part of our effects had to be cut adrift owing to the heavy seas that had arisen. After thirty hours we arrived at Sloop Harbor, bein the only refuge we could make, and, after search, found that the nearest in habitants lived at Emily Harbor, distant several miles; and over there pathless Arctic hills, through snow and drift and gulches, my wife and dear children had to wade to find, happily, Kind Friends at Emily Harbor, who brought our boats around from Sloop Harbor, and did all in their power to add to our comfort until the arrival of the An ship Grand Lake, command ed by kind Captain Delaney—and all this suffering, colonial expense, and anxiety of friends, through the cowardly action of a fellow-man!
