—Mr. Russell, of tho United State* Geological Survey, who lias spent the season in the California mountains near Mono Lake, says that the lava there is the result of recent volcanic outbursts. His studies on the old beaches lead him to the conviction that there have b^en two ice ages over the world, and that the second, dating bnlt;-k to the advent of man on the earth was the most severe and most protracted. He addc that the si»;ns of glaciers aro as fresh as though left yesterday, lie has found living glaciers in the Sierras back to Mono Lake, not far from the Yosemite Valley. Thev are about a mile long and many feet deep.—Ckicnyo Times.
