OUR Mftisfr REVIStOff.”Wc present out- readers with The It e p u n i.ic an * Le ade r this week in an Charged and revised form, and printed on a now power press. Wo have for some months felt the necessity of more space in our paper, and that the paper we wore printing was not in keeping with Malvern’s rapid growth and increasing importance as a manufacturing and commorcial center. It is an undisputed fact that our city has grown faster during tho past year and.developed moro in business resources than any other town in tho county. It is, therefore, eminently propor that The Leader should be tho first newspaper in tho county to put in a power press and make corresponding improvements throughout the office. It does this from a determination to Icecp paco with our rapid advance as a community, and to fairly represent its thrift and enterprise. The Leader in its new form is nearly twice its original size. The second and third and sixth and seventh pages are made up entirely of reading matter, consisting of the best literary and miscellaneous selections. The first and fourth pages will be devoted to editorial matter, news notes, etc., while the fifth page will bo for local news and county correspondence. On tho eighth page may bo found “The Farm,” of which moro extended mention is made elsewhere. It will be seen that our reading matter covers a wide range and embraces something of-special interest to every reader in the county. While we have been at great expense in putting in a new press and making the necessary changes and additions to our office, we have decided to koep the prico of subscription at $1.50 per year, trusting that old subscribers will continue with us, and that a sufficient number of new names may be added to our list to, m a measure, justify the outlay. In conclusion, we desire to thank the business men of Malvern and surrounding towns, and all the patrons of tho paper and tho office, for the generous patronage given us during our first year with The Leader. It is because of this patronage, given freely and unsolicited, coupled with our entire faith in the future of Malvern and Mills county, that we are induced to incur the expense of making the necessary improvements that enables us to place'TheiLeader where we hope it may be considered an honor to the town and county. Judging the future by the past we ;‘have every reason to believe this patronage will be continued, and materially increased. Hoping that this may be the case, and that Tiie Leader will, sooner or later, become a welcome visitor to every household ia the county, we closo wish this benediction: Peace, prosperity and TheLeader bo with you.• — ■4 • • •On Wednesday night of last week; at about ton o’clock, tho alarm of fire startled our citizens, and the residence of Samuel Beavers, in the northwest part of town, was discovered to be in flamos. The fire originated iu the kitchen, after tho family had retired and made such rapid headway that some ,of. the children narrowly escaped with their lives. As tho city has no means whatever for fighting fires, nothing could be done to save the building, and the attention of the crowd was directed to saving tho surrounding residences. A strong wind was blowing from tho northwest and tho houses of M. J. Higgins, J’as. Talbott and W. W. Wills were in great danger. Great showers of sparks and huge burning cindors were carried far to tho southeast, and but for constant watching of the buildings in that direction a disastrous conflagration must Imvo ensued. Twice' the cinders caught in tho rear of Paddock’s store and wore as promptly extinguished. Mr. Beavers’ house was insured for six hundred dollars, otherwise the loss would fall upon him heavily, as he is a poor man. Tho necessity of some sort of lire protection was so plainly indicated on the night in question that wo think om citizens will certainly make some move toward organizing a firo company and purchasing the equipments. Lot this bo done at once, 01*0 wo have a greater loss to record.
