On Wednesday night of last week; at about ton o’clock, the alarm of fire startled our citizens, and the residence of Samuel Beavers, in the northwest part of town, was discovered to be in flamos. The fire originated in the kitchen, after the family had retired and made such rapid headway that some .of. the children narrowly escaped with their lives. As the city has no moans whatever for fighting fires, nothing could be dono to save the budding, and the attontion of the crowd was directed to saving the surrounding residences. A strong wind was blowing from tho northwest aud tho houses of M. J. Higgins, Jas. Talbott and W. NV, Wills were in great danger. Great showers of sparks and huge burning cinders were carried far to tho southeast, and but for constant watching of tho buildings in that direction a disastrous conflagration must havo ensnod. Twice' the cinders caught in tho rear of Paddock’s store and were as promptly extinguished. Mr. Beavers’ house was insured for six hundred dollars, otherwise the loss would fall upon him heavily, as lie is a poor man. The necessity of some sort of fii*o protection was so plainly indicated on thenight in question that wo think our citizens will certainly make some move toward organizing a fire company and purchasing tho equipments. Lot-this bo done at ouco, ore wo have a greater loss to record.
