While J-104 targets the 1849 year olds, WHIS sets its sights on those 25 and up. “We’re aiming at babyboomers and their parents who aren’t thrilled with some of today’smusic, but like the stuff they grew up on,” said company president Mike Shott. Station fare includes current music by the likes of Lionel Ritchie and Barry Manilow, crossover country tunes by Alabama, Kenny Rogers and other crooners, and oldies from as far back as the late ’50s and early’60s.When WHIS went on the air in 1923, it was the first in the area and one of the first in the state. It started out as a country station, switched to middle-of-the-road in 1960, “beautiful music” in 1981, a year of “nostalgia,” in 1984, and this year reached its current adult format.WHIS reaches a radius of 20-25 miles during the day, when it broadcasts at 5,000 watts. From sunset to sunrise, its power drops to 500 watts (FCC regulations) and it reaches just Mercer and parts of Tazewell counties.WKOY 1240 AM and WKMY 101 FM (K-Rock), Princeton and Bluefield. The two stations simulcast a Contemporary Hit Radio format.
