-The City of Galesburg’s new human services director says her first job will be to learn community needs and develop programs to meet them. Miss Pamela Davidson, 24, who was appointed Tuesday, told reporters Wednesday that a number of gaps often exist in human services programs, while other programs overlap. She said she will attempt to fill any gaps and eliminate any overlaps. THE NEW DIRECTOR will combine into one agency the present Human Relations and Office of Equal Opportunity offices. City officials are pres ently attempting to find a location large enough to house a staff of four persons. Mrs. Iane Hendricks, Equal Opportunity officer, and Mrs. Louise Wilder, a human rela tions officer, will work with Miss Davidson in the new of fice. Miss Davidson said she did not completely understand the functions of the two offices which previously were sepa rate, and added she would study both. Asked if she antici pated any problems in com bining the two existing agen cies, she replied, ‘Not prob lems, but of course, there is always confusion when there is change.” The new director said she is looking forward to her new duties, which will start Dec. 16. “I like working with peo ple and the challenge of work ing with the social services bureaucracy,” ‘Miss Davidson said. CITY MANAGER Thomas Herring said combining the offices will make staff mem bers part of a “human ser vices team.’’ He said it would give the office , a broader view and make it more effec tive in serving people. Commenting that the city was “extremely fortunate” to attract someone with Miss Davidson’s, background and experience, Herring said her dility coupled with that of present staff members will move forward social services in the city. MISS DAVIDSON, a native of Salem, received a bache lor’s degree in psychology from Bradley University in 1971 and has 15 hours of credit toward an advanced degree. Currently associated with the Tri-County Urban League in Peoria, she has been a Peoria County juvenile probation of ficer, a state rehabilitation counselor and a self-employed social service consultant. Her starting salary is $1.00 a month. Tracing the city’s steps in filling the position, Herring said the city had advertised the position last summer, but progress was delayed when the testing procedure was questioned by Larry Hend- Lee Agency (Continued on Page 11) Pamela Davidson
