The 54th annual turkey dinner will be served at Commerce today. W. J. Kraft has been doing some painting in the Frobase dance hall. Emil Dohogne of near Kelso had business Monday morning in Benton. A. S. Brown of Charleston was here Monday and paid up for his County Paper. John Blattel of the Chaffee route was in Benton Saturday and renewed for his County Paper. The DeReign Missionary Society met last Thursday afternoon with Mrs. E. R. Tirmenstein. Curtis Kelly and Velma Watson of Blodgett secured a marriage license at Charleston last week. J. Sherwood Smith spent the last of the week in Jefferson City at a convention of county clerks. Mr. and Mrs. Adam LeGrand have started housekeeping in rooms at the Mrs. Mary Bertrand home. H. F. Kirkpatrick and Emil Steck attended a district Masonic meeting at Cape Girardeau Friday night. A daughter was born Saturday morning to Mr. and Mrs. E. M. Moore. She has been named Patricia Joanne. Tom Hodgkiss returned on Friday from Jefferson City, where he had been relief guard for about a month. Leo Diebold returned to Springfield Wednesday. He was called here by the death of his father, F. L. Die bold. Mr. and Mrs. T. M. Scott of Jeffer son City visited Scott county friends and relatives the latter part of the week. Charles Jenkins and his crew are running about four jobs at present. Bernard Brew was added to the force last week. Mr. and Mrs. Alden Pinney were in St. Louis Thursday and Friday, the former attending the reunion of the Scottish Rite. A good sized delegation from Ben ton witnessed “The Green Pastures” at Cape Girardeau Wednesday night of last week. A Thanksgiving service will be held at the Methodist church tonight at 7:00. Everybody is most cordially in vited to attend. Mail Carrier Ben Adams is driving a new Ford coach that he bought of Fred A. Groves at Cape Girardeau the latter part of the week. Miss Martha Harrison, who has had a position with the county relief com mittee, went to Jefferson City Sun day, where she has employment. Vic Bollinger and his carpenters have been at work at the old Law rence Ganges place in the sand. New roofs have been put on the house and barn and the buildings have been re paired. L. P. Woodward and Hosea Long of Vanduser were here Monday. Mr. Woodward reported his son, Ben, as seriously sick with Bright’s disease and high blood pressure. He has been ill for nine weeks. W. C. Porter, Jr., whose hand was injured some time ago when he was holding a rope that was attached to a cow, got it hurt again Friday night while playing basketball and it was in a sling a few days. Remember Santa Claus wants to help you with your Christmas shop ping. The bazaar at the court house Saturday, Dec. 1st, by the DeReign Missionary Society will be a good place to start gift buying. Wilson Farris is like George Wash ington in one respect, at least, he chopped down a cherry tree. Last week the huge cherry tree that stood in front of the Mrs. May Farris home was cut down as it had become dan gerous because of rotting. The tree was doubtless older than this town, as the oldest residents say it was there as long as they can remember. It was more than three feet through.
