Maddifion, vice president of Montgomery Ward Company, issued a statement in which lie said!Our reason for securing these extensive warehouse facilities at that point and at this time may be of some interest to other industries.We have always sold a large number of items on the basis of direct shipment from the factory to the consumer, and tills plan for many years worked out well. The development of the business', however, and the growth of tonnage for transportation have more than kept pace with the facilities of carriers for prompt handling, and this, together with the growing demand for quicker deliveries, made it necessary to Inaugurate some new methods of handling this type of factory shipment business About three years ago Montgomery Ward Company began to experiment witli a plan for carrying tills kind of merchandise in warehouses with the idea that if the movement was approved by their trade and the freight could he successfully bandied, they would eventually very largely abandon the direct shipment from factory to consumer in favor of shipment direct from warehouse, at, which stock had been accumulated in large quantities.With this end in view, wo located comparatively small warehouse in this Central Manufacturing District, as well as carrying some merchandise in various outside warehouses. This experiment was so largely successful that we have decided to go a great deal further, in this warehouse project, wholly on a service basis.‘‘Chicago iias the most elaborate and expeditious movement of package car service to all ports of the country, and is logically the place at which to locate large distributing warehouses of this kind. . The location of this new plant in the Central Manufacturing district on the Chicago Junction railway and adjaceiUcto the Union Freigla station of’ that—company’, is, in bur opinion, certain1 to afford us as economic and expeditious a movement of freight as can be found anywhere within the city and perhaps better than can be found anywhere else,”Two other important deals bring to the district two firms well known in the automobile business.
