A Victim of a Gross Outrage. A great wave of indignation swept over this entire section of country when it became known the first of the week that Dr. J. L. Backstrom had been arrested and desrcerated in jail at Indianola on charge of poisoning a negro convict on the State convict farm in Sunflower county . ‘the Progress has not had an opportunity to gather the full facts in the infamous proceedings but, briefly stated, the indictment is a piece of spite work on the part of certain discharged em poyees of the convict camp who had whipped the negro to death. ‘the whole administration of the Sunflower camp is a roten to the core, and the outrageous charge against Dr. Backstrom is in keeps ing with other acts. Dr. Backstrom was released on bond Wednesday and has return ed home, and we hope in the next issue of the Progress to give our readers a full and complete expo sition of the rotten affair.
