The do plication of the canals and the planets in a phenomenon for which astronomers have been watching with great interest, it was fir*t observed hy the Julian Astronomer SrhUppan lli a number of years ago. lie announced that pome of the straight linen, which are known as canal*, were to be rOen accompanied by a tiarallel line, as if another canal existed, beside tbe first. During the different oppositions of Mar* the canals have been closely watch* d to learn more* about the dnplication. The tiret European astronomer to observe the phenomenon was I'errotin ut Nice, who in two successive observations observe*! duplication. In Ibis country the canals were observe*! doubled by the l.ick Observatory in 18JH), and again in !81»2. Inning the present position one canal only hits heretofore been announced as double, thin being Ganges. The observer of this was Professor Holden of l.ick. Observations of the saints canal since that time have not shown it to be con-tinuoiiily double. The cause of the du-Slicatlon is hy no means determine*!. Ir.
