ThanksgivingBy Locke E, Bowman, Jr., Pastor of the Presbyterian ChurchWhen the Pilgrim Fathers observed that first Thanksgiving Day, now an American Institution, they were thankful that they had been preserved to offer their prayers to God. Their future was uncertain; their health was poor; their possessions were meager. But they were free spirits and filled to overflowing with reverence and adoration for their God.Today America is far more cosmopolitan than U was then. It has become the melting pot of the nations, of faiths,'and of traditions. The freedom of the human spirit is still the priceless possession of us all. Our future is still uncertain; our physical health and our physical possessions are strong and plentiful. We have but one thing iO which we must devote our firm attention these days—and that is the condition of our spiritual lives. How well has the spirit kept up with the abundance and progress of our scientific and physical character? Our future hangs in the balance around this one thing. To measure up to the timeless truths of love, faith, and charity which our Judeo-Christian tradition teaches in our prime challenge. On this Thanksgiving week-end, let us re-dedicate ourselves to that same reverence and adoration for Almighty God which Inspired the first of the Thanksgiving Days!
