Growth of Negro Police Ranks in SouthCOLUMBIA, S. C. (ANP) — Sixty-two cities and towns in 12 southern states now employ 101 uniformed Negro policemen, 33 Negro plainclothesmen and seven Negro policemen, according to the latest compilation by the Southern Regional council here last week. The present total of a cities using Negro police contrasts with 46 in October, 1947, and 54 a year later.The capitals of all southern States, except Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana and Kentucky, now use Negro police. More cities and towns in Florida use Negro policemen than in any other southern state - 14 in all. North Carolina runs second with 12, followed by Texas with nine. Columbia, S. C., and Atlanta are the latest state capitals to adopt the practice.About half the cities and towns using Negro policemen in Negro areas adopted the practice since 1940. Five cities employed Negro policemen as far back as 1920! and nine, back in 1930.
