by3rnA WOMAN with plans.Interesting Lecture in Cambridge-st.Methodist Ohurch by a Former Resideut of LindsayMrs. Mary Coleman Stuckhert of Jacksonville, Florida, is in town on a visit to relatives, but will leave in a few days for the Old Country. She is a daughter of the late William Culbert and will be remembered by many of our residents. Her grandfather, David Culbert, was one of the first settlers in this section, and was one of the postmasters of Lindsay in its early days. The homestead house, erected a little over fifty years ago, still stands on Colborne-st. and is occupied by the Misses Gourlay. The dwelling, however, mis beer kept in such a good state of repairs that no oue would ever dream in glancing at it that half a century of sunshine, shadow and shower had passed over its roof. From a bright, vivacious girl,Mary Culbert, now Mrs. Stuckhert. has developed iuto a woman with a mission with definite aims and plans. Her thoughts have run along the cooperative and socialistic lines and she has evolved ideal homes in ideil places in order to produce ideal people in the generations to come. She has planned out dwelling houses without kitchens, proposing to have all the baking, cooking and laundry work done in a large central establishment. Some science will be thrown into the preparation of food, so that the co-operative people who adopt the plan will be made happier by being kept in a good, healthy condition. The details of the scheme are all worked out 10 a nicety and embraces all the modern luxuries and conveniences of cosy homes at a moderate coat. Mis. Stuckhert has laid out a Colorado plan, a Chicago plan and a Florida plan. The first one was wiped out by the financial panic of a few years ago, but the second one has been endorsed by the Chicago university authorities, and capitalists will carry the project out, bringing into existence the necleus of a new and permanent white city — white marble buildings costing from ten to forty thousand dollars. The Florida plan has been approved of by many and mote particularly by some of the wealthy residents along the St. John Bluffs, opposite Jacksonville, at which point it is proposed to produce a sort of transformation scene. The spot selected, although very pictupesque at present, is to be made a perfect paradise, or a Garden of Eden if you like. On Thursday evening of last week the talented and clever Mrs. Stuctthert entertained a number of personal friends, including Squire Macdonnel, Dr. Herriman, Mr. \V. A. Goodwin and others, to a detailed outline of her proposed plan to improve the condition of womankind and make home life happier and healthier. She exhibited some beautiful plans of buildings and grounds which were much admired. These plans were prepared by her husband, Mr. A. Morris Stuckhert, who is said to be one of the finest of American architects, numbers of his designs having been published in British magazines. During the Columbian Exposition Mrs. Stuckhert, by request of Mrs. Potter Palmer, delivered addresses fcr more than two : months, speaking to some of the congresses and general audiences. She has received invitations to visit. London, Pa.-is, Vienna and other places, to ad- ( vance her household reform scheme. Editor Stead, formerly of the Pall Mall Gazette, takes great stock in it. Squire 1 Macdonnel has had short interviews with Mrs. Stuckhert, and fully endorses her ' socialistic co-operative proposition. The i lady unfolded her plan fully last Thura- | day evening in the lecture room of the ] Oambridge-st. Methodist church by special request of the Ladies’ Aid Society. -The Rev. Mr. Shorey occupied the chair and introduced the lady speaker. Mrs. Stuckhert gave a most interesting 1 address on the innovation she proposes * in regard to household social reform, which was received with every attention j by the intelligent audience preaent. At £ the close a vote of thanks was moved by { Dr. Herriman and seconded by Mr. W. , H. Stevens, of the collegiate institute, both of whom approved of the majority 5 of the ideas advanced. 1
