Page6D, Hammond (La.) Sunday Star Shopping Guido. Nov. 27, 1977How often have you placed a blade of grass in your mouth as you sat enjoying the warmth of the sun. to feel the delicate touch of the wind in your face? How often have you looked from the window of your car at the landscape asit flashed by?It would be a meaningless, dull world if it was not green and not crowned and unjeweled by wild flowers. We have much to be thankful for here inLouisianaGreens of various shades flood our state from horizon to horizon. To add to this beauty, nature has dotted this land with colorful wild flowers. Birds of many species live within this green wonderland. It is their songs that greet each dawn which is pleasing to God. It is man who does not listen.F.ven the sun seems more golden inLouisiana. How brightly it shines on thew oodlands and streams. Nature is wise in its ways It is man who lackswisdom. And it seems that some men believe themselves wiser than others. It is the wisdom of these men who cause destruction and unbalance nature. As far back as man's knowledge begins, man has cut the fruits of the earth with a scythe or piced it by handTall grass was kept trim by grazing cattle loiter machines were developed to take the place of men The lawns are trimmed with mowers, the grass along the highways were trimmed and in some cases are still trimmed with ganged mowers*. This has proven to costl\. so man has now turned to chemicals which kills the grass and all living matter along the roadway. Nototilv does it kill, it creates a brown uglinessThe word chemical has grown into afright ning word and it should be feared. The Tangipahoa environmental action center has asked the Tangipahoa Police Jurv to discontinue the use of herbicides because of its possible health hazards. It is feared that herbicides is directly connected with the causing of cancer, miscarriages during pregnancy, migrane headaches, nausea, skin rashes and other reported illsThe court of wisemen has rejected TEAL'S Proposals because the chemical has not been proven to be a health hazard. This case reminds me of another case that took place a few years ago The citizens in and around Natalbany asked that traffic lights be installed at the cross road in their small community. As I understand it the Louisiana highway department rejected their pleas. Due to the fact that the traffic did not warant traffic lightsOne day a frightful accident took place at the junction which cost the life of a young girl. She could not have been over or 11 years old. an innocent young life was snuffed out.The sorrow of this child's death must still burn deeply in the hearts of this child's parents Life has grown cheap. Must this continue to be so! Should not the Police Jury discountinue the use of Herbicide until it is proven without a questionable doubt that it is not hazardous to one's health. This, I believe, would be wise action. The Tangipahoa environmental councilw ill join hands w ith TEAC.1 say to the Police Jury and the citizens of the parish to step wisely for man cannot undo what it has unwisely done, nor can it return life. If you still put blades of grass in your mouth as you wonder over the fields, block the habit. It s not health.
