Coveite Earns SuperiorSpeech Rating At SWTSUSAN MAKCOS-HowardPayne University, with 135points, took the sweepstakes award in Southwest Texas State University’s 30th annual Intercollegiate Speech Festival.Stephen F. Austin State University and North Texas State University trailedwith 95 points apiece.In all. 325 students from30 colleges and universities including one from out-of-state competed in the festival.Howard Payne’s winning effort was spearheaded by Rachel Beaucham, who accounted for 40 points, and Diana Grant, who scored 30points. Ms. Beaucham tool top honors among indivi dual speakers, while Ms Grant was fourth.Sandwichedbetweenwere Gary Garrison of r University in second 40 points and Paulllo of North Texas inthird with 30 points.Individual superior excellent ratings were awarded. There weresuperior ratings and 164 excellent ratings.Events included extemporaneous speaking, communication analysis, original poetry, persuasive speaking, expository speak ing, discussion, open cate-Newsgory interpretation, poetry, dramatic interpretation, readers theatre, novice debate and experience debate.Kathy Miller of Copperas Cove was the only Southwest lexas student earning a superior rating. Her event was poetry.SWT students winning excellent ratings were Don Weston of Houston in extemporaneous speaking, Marcus Weems of West Columbia in original poetry, Linda Corona of San Benito in persuasive speakCarl Malmsten ofmgUniversal City in expository speaking, Hilirine Wade of San Marcos in poetry and Kathy Miller in dramaticinterpretation.
