San Francisco Is Informed By Naval Officer By Uniren Presa. SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 27—The U. .S. Navy informed the City of San Francisco today that it wants Treasure Island in San Francisco Bay, site of the 1939-40 Golden Gate International Exposition. for “naval purposes” Capt H. G Taylor and Capt. A. Carlson, representing the 12th naval district commanded by Ad miral Arthur Hepburn, notified Chief Administrative Officer Alfred J. Cleary they were authorized to start negotiations for acquisition of Treasure Ireland Capts. Taylor and Carlson de clined to divulge the purpose for which the “island” would be used by the navy but it was under stood it might be converted into a training station or base. City Attorney John J. O'Toole said that to clear the way for negotiations with the navy, the city would have to dispose of the lease held by Pan American Air ways Pan American has its trans-Pa cific Clipper base on the south end of Treasure Island ,the “port of trade winds.” It was understood an act of the Calfornia legisla ture would be necessary before the city can relinquish the island. Large buildings on Treauure Island which were used for exhibit purposes at the world’s fair have not yet been torn down, and , at way, suggested several of them might be available as hangars and barracks Treasure Island is not strictly an island, being connected with Yerba Buena Island by a narrow causeway It is man-made, hav ing been built up by ardering op erations.
