The Belief of ProtestantsEveryone interested in Scripture studies knows (ssya the *• Catholic Times ”) the v«ry liberal tendencies of Canor Cheyne's ** Encyclopedia Biblica,” which has created a mild scandal in Anglican quarters. But its doctrines have been received with delight in one quarter at least; Miraa Ghulam Ahmed, a learned Italian Mahom-edan. positively exults at. finding that the “Encyclopedia Biblica’' destroys the divine character of Holy Writ. “The Bible has been swept away as a straw,” he says, before the mighty current of modern criticism,” and he calls upon the Christian missionaries in Eastern land to avow publicly the doctrines taught by this pernicious Encyclopedia. Naturally, this learned Mahoinedan's joy i« unpleasant, to Protestants, and a correspondent of the “ Guardian ” asks whether Canon Cheyne should be allowed to ub© his position in the Established Church to disseminate doctrines directly subversive of her own teaching. He thinks the matter is of Buch gravity to call for the intervention of the Bishope. No doubt it is; but what can the Bishops do? Trials for heresy in Civil Courts are rarely successful. And besides, who can tell whether the Anglican Episcopate bos any one set of dogmas to wnich, as a collective body, it could manage to assent? Possibly Canon Cheyne feels the force of ihie fact as well as do the Bishops.
