“IIARRY VON TILZER gave Tin Pan Alley its name,” said Walter Winchell in his “On Broadway.” Harry Von Tilzer, (Harry Gumbinsky, he took his mother’s maiden name after he became successful as a song writer), is a native of Indianapolis. “There were Louis, Julius, Albert, Harry, maybe another brother” said Henry Solomon, a friend of theirs. “No girls in the family! He wrote, ‘In the Good Old Summer time,’ fShe Was Only a Bird in a Gilded Cage’ and many other songs. His folks owned a shoe store combined with a false hair establishment in Indi-unapolis. Women went in for rats, false curls, bangs and all kind of additional false hair trims!”
