Health, Nutrition Program Topics for PAFLE SessionThe third PAFLE meeting in a series of four, being sponsored by the Gatesville Parent Teacher Association, will be held at 7 p.m. Monday in the library of Gatesville High School.The topic will be “Parenting: The Importance of Health and Nutrition,’* Presenting the nutrition phase of the program will be Mrs. Janda Coward and Mrs. Laura White, who will show a filmstrip, “Feeding Your Young Children,** about nutrition for the preschool years, and another filmstrip, “Breakfast and the Bright Life,** dealing with nutrition education for the teenager.Dr. Deborah Spiva of Dallas, who was associated with Lowrey Clinic and Coryell Memorial Hospital for one year and is the sister of PAFLE chairman Mrs. DeDe Powell, will discuss health hazards which families face.Mrs. Coward, a native of Gatesville, serves as director of dietary services at Coryell I Memorial Hospital. She hasbeen associated with the local » hospital since 1969 in various\ capacities. A registered dieti-1 tian, she. holds a B degree1 from North Texas State2 University with a major in foods and nutrition. She is married to Bob Coward and they have two children, Jill and Jeff. Besides her many other professional and civic activities, she serves as treasurer of the Gatesville PTA.Mrs. White, a West Texas product, is a teacher of home economics related occupations in the local high school. She has taught in Gatesville for the last ten years and is advisor of the HERO-FHA chapter. She holds a BS degree in home economics from the University of Texas at Austin and an M. Ed. degree in counseling and guidance from East Texas State University. A member of the board of directors of the Vocational Homemaking Teachers Association of Texas, she has also served in several PTA offices in past years. Mrs. White is the wife of Dale White and they have two daughters, Michele Nichols of Houston, and Suzanne, who is a sophomore at GHS.Dr. Spiva, a Fredericksburg native, is presently serving a fellowship in immunology in the department of microbiology at Southwestern Medical School at the University of Texas Health Science Center in Dallas and is on the faculty at the Medical School. She has recently become board certified in internal medicine.Dr. Spiva graduated with honors from the University of Texas at Austin with a BA degree in zoology. At the university she was a member of Posse, Orange Jackets, Alpha Delta Pi, Phi Beta Kappa, AED, and was a Cactus Goodfellow and Scottish Rite Scholar. She graduated from the University of Texas Medical School at San Antonio where she was a member of the UTMSSA admissions committee, AMWA. She conducted a pilot study on the Mexican-American population in San Antonio and completed several acting internships. She served an elective in Connecticut in hematology research.She served her internship and residency at the University ofDR. DEBORAH SPIVA Health Hazards Her TopicStrong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, N. Y., in internal medicine. She published an article in the American Journal of Medicine in March of 1974 entitled “Acute Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia Due to a Low Molecular Weight IgM Cold Hemolysin Associated with Episodic Lymphoid Granulomatous Vasulitis.** She has several other papers being completed for publication. Her professional affiliations are American Medical Association, associate member American College of Physicians, AMWA, and Phi Beta Kappa.A PTA leader said, “Door prizes will be awarded at Monday night’s meeting, refreshments will be served and babysitters will again be provided.
