Creature Sighted In DaylightMASON MONSTER SPOTTEDBv MARY HYREPoint Pleasant CorrespondentPOINT PLEASANT—The Mason Monster ’ made its daylight debut on Friday morning, adding Torn Ury, 25, Clarksburg to its list of endorsees.“I never saw anything like it.I was so frightened I just couldn’t go to work today. This thing had a wingspan every bit of 10 feet. It could be a bird, but I surely never saw one like it,” the former Point Pleasant resident commented.Ury sighted the creature at7.15 a m. Friday while driving toward Clarksburg on Route 62. When he reached the vicinity ofwthe Homer Smith farm, about eight miles north of Point Pleasant, he saw the creature ’ rise up just like a helicopter” froma nearby field.•«He told Millard Halstead, chief deputy sheriff, that the creature hovered over his automobile, traveling at approximately 70 miles an hour, then flew toward the Ohio River from a point near Kirkland Memorial Garden, near the TNT area near the spot of other sightings.‘i was scared to death this thing would come right throughmy convertible top,” Ury said.Ury was the first person tosee the “thing” during daylight. The creature was first sighted on Nov. 15 bv Mr. and Mrs. Rocer Scarberrv and Mr. and Mrs. Steve Mallette, all ot Point Pleasant. They reported that the creattired hovered over their car at speeds up to 100 milesan hour.Thev described the creaturepfas having a man-like body, a 10-foot wingspan, and red eyes, approximately two inches m diameter and about six inchesapart. Several other Mason Countv residents have also re-wported seeing the creatureA Point Pleasant fireman saidtoday that an out of state fam-%■ily reported seeing the creature on Thursday night near Krodel Park, Point Pleasant.The most recent sighting discounts the possibility that thecreature is a sandhill crane. Dr. Robert Smith biologist at West Virginia University, offered thecrane theorv.Rut a Ohio University biologistreplied that sandhill cranes havenever been known to migratenear this area, and they seldomstay long in a single location.Is the “thing” really a crane or other large bird? Is it a rrea ture from outer space ' Is it aresurrected pterodactyl, listedin geology texts as an “extinct flying reptile of the Jurassic period?”Whatever it is, the creaure has convinced another frightenedmotorist that it isn’t a figment of the imagination.
