‘Grid guesses: ‘Southwest conference — TCU. over S.M.U.— After see eee the upsets of Thanksgiving, the underdog seems to be the best ‘het, but we still can't see how SMU ‘can hold the Frogs. ; over Rice—A toss-up with Bears getting slight edge if field is dry. ‘The writer didn’t have much to be thankful for, as far as football results were concerned, on Thanks giving day. Not only did the Aggies lose, but after missing only two guesses in the last three weeks, we missed three and a half of our seven for nol. Tuesday night through , with the three losses by one point each (Texas 7-6 over : 76 over Waco, and T.C.U. 14-18 over the S.M.U. Colts.) Our guess on Arkansas was a toss-up, with the Hogs hav ing only a slight nod over Tulsa, and they tied 6-6. We picked the Lamer-Normangee, Yearling-Fish and Consolidated North Zulch tilts right, but it was about the worst gressing of any week this year. Football definitely is a game of spirit. If anyone doubted that, look at mny Day's results. Texas and Temple were underdogs by large margins, but they cut loose ith all there was in them and won, were only a few of the dope hheavers. That’s what makes the game what it is. If the writer has ever seen an left pass defense, the pupils of X%. Bible had wo Thursday. ‘The inability of the Aggies to gain the air was not due to wild oo in most cases, but to the that there always was a oa ‘man on the receiver. ‘We also saw two strong all-con candidates in action. Jack is going ‘to be hard to keep that all-Southwest team at He was great against the and critics who had seen before declared he also had good in defeat. ‘Then there was Wallace Lawson. ‘Little Gilly Davis was splendid. So was Nelson Puett, who scored the touchdown. So were Beefus Bryan, ‘Bill Forney, and most of the other for they were playing ball, but it appeared to this writer that Wallace Lawson ‘was the boy around whom the suc cess of the Longhorn backfield i The Steers had carried the fight all the way until he went out in the second quarter with an in jury, and the contest began to be immediately. The Aggies the better of the third period ‘end! Lawson re-entered the game, ‘end from then on it was the Steers’ ball game until that last minute or two. He is one of those boys who can do anything, and he has about to drive as any back you will around. To us the gale inn oae put a case of the poorly, but of the es per forming better than they knew how. About the only ee thing the writer remembers Texas pull ing was their calling of plays in the last minute. Then, back on their own 10-yard stripe and leading 7-0, they tried intricate plays that re quired the handling of the ball by more than one back, thus giving more chances for fumbles and for nearly lost them the victory. They fought their hearts out, however, and Coach Bible must have had very pleasant dreams Thursday fight. Two years ago the Longhorns also upset the Ag gies when apparently far weaker, but they scored early and then played defensive ball. Thursday they were carrying the fight nearly all the way. Temple's victory over Waco must have been swept to the Wildcats and their fans. Last year they, with Doss and Weeson flying high, were big fav orites over Waco, but the Tigers upset them 7-0. This year the ta bles were turned, but the dope in dicated a much bigger margin for Waco this year than Temple seem ed to have last year. The 7-6 victory more than evened the score. Last year Temple's de feat merely threw the race into a three-way tie, and Temple got the right to represent the district any how. Thursday both were unde feated, and the winner became the undisputed champ. It may mean a Rose Bowl trip for the Wildcats. Early in the week the Temple athletic council stated it would give the team the choice between the Cotton Bowl and Sugar Bowl, and that if the club won the district and then two gates in the eliminations, it could choose be tween these two and the Rose Bowl. MEANDERINGS:—Donald Wee don, ex-Bronc who now is a guard for the Texas Yearlings, was nam ed as the outstanding line star for the Texas freshman by the Daily Texan when they defeated the Ag gie Fish 74... . By the way, that was the first defeat an Aggie Fish team coached by Hub McQuillan has ever suffered... When South ern California walloped U.C.LA. by the surprising count of 42-7 Thursday, the Trojans became the favorite to represent the West Coast in the Rose Bowl. are tied by California, losing to Wash ington in a let-down after they had defeated California. but prob ably will get the bid because they were the victor in the game be tween the two contenders. They say that Southern California is more likely to choose T.C.U. for the bid than California would be... . Over heard at the ball game Thursday. Two ex-Aggies were hitting the bottle a bit hard, and one grum bled: “I can't see a thing, can you?” The other replied, “Yeah. I'm seeing too much. Gimme an other drink.”. .. The Aggies final ly broke one jinx when they scored on Texas, for it was their first touchdown on Memorial Stadium field. They did not do it by carrying the ball over, however, having to cover a Texas fumble. . . . Look for the Longhorns to start up the foot ball trail a little bit next year, and to become real contenders in 1940 if they get another good freshman squad this coming fall, which is likely.
