' I* era Byron, Captain Emerson, about which F red considerable has been said of late, made ; jj()U ree* her drst appearance in our waters yes-was terday. The Byron waa built at Ro- ! „ *nd Chester, and it owned by Toof, Phillips In A Emerson, of Memphis, Tennessee, i jn’g The invention is patented by F. M. Gol fro Mahan and Primus Emerson. The ,re- principle covered by this patent is CA certainly original and ingenious. The * , Port Byron is a large class laker.* The upper part of the bow is shaped ^. 1 like an ordinary boat, but below the‘j ; water line the bows, instead of round* irif ing away at the sides to clear the wa- “Th ter, come Hush out even with the stem.^ Between these two projections the bow ‘ is hollowed out, giving it tha appear- . ^J j ance of an immense scoop-shovel ' :f' standing upright with the hollowed Clg ai‘ part facing toward the front. At the ex, ; bottom this hollow tapers otf into a u,1' ; flume-way 30 by 12 inchas, which runs £2.'• ^e through the entire length of the boat, j *over the floor timbers. The propelling ! yrJ| ^.n ' power is an iron paddle wheel, 10 feet j K in diameter, with vertical buckets 30x j _ .^ 28 inches. These buckets or paddles Xlll1enter and leave the water in a verti- I ; j cal position, so that no power is lost in - lifting or striking the water. The wheel is located in the middle ; of the boat near the stern, and at the end of the flume mentioned above. The action of the wheel draws the water out of the flume, which is replenished from the bow\ It is expected tnat the entire amount of water displaced by the boat will be drawn through the flune-way by the action ^ ‘ of the wheel. If this is done no swell or wave will be produced. The Port Byron, on her passage up from Lockport, made six miles an hour j _ £■ with 70 tons of freight on board. She was loaded yesterday with 6,500 bushels corn, by J. W. Bridgeman A Co., sjc and started this morning for New i York, We shall watch the progress of the Byron with considerable inter- j est, but we are of opinion that this j trip will demonstrate that some j changes in the machinery and model ! are necessary before she can be called I a complete success.:easas-;htIX-3n.te-aIr.*xtIr.g-reTi.veWATlt;CFPencHasP.MathpnblitCoimiDoe •it* t deS-ndinto:ern-l. -
