An ear of corn became lodged in the picker and as Walter attempted to dislodge the wind blew the loose end of his sleeve into the picker, pulling his hand in along with it For about 20 minutes he clung to the gears and other parts of the machinery while shouting for help It was getting dark when his wife heard his cries and ran to his assistance* shutting off the machin-£ I ery She could not free his hand* so f! ran home and called Dr Edw Dewein of this city to meet her at the Red -! Ra^ strip mine and she would take ? him to where her husband was ! caught, which was nearby In the -1 meantime Sylvester Frisch, who was | in another part of the farm came to f. Beisiegei s rescue, took some parts off the machinery and freed him and ■ rushed him to Dr Dewein*s home /1 hei^e without telling his wife The Doctor arrived at the strip mine and with Mrs Beisiegei stumbled through0the cornfield, it was very dark by this time* only to find that Walter had been freed and taken to his home. Dr Dewein then returned home and took his patient to the hospital* where it became necessary to amputate the middle and index fingers at the hand.f
