Steve Cook, Star Of Potts’ Gym, Minneapolis, Engages Billy Norton Over Same Route By DICK HACKENBERG The flying fists of Max Kalbren er, Moorhead youth hailed as a coming star by Twin City ring cri tics, will inaugurate the Fargo Elks club’s sixth consecutive season of boxing next Tuesday night, Leo Kessick, matchmaker and referee, announced today. Kalbrener will meet Bud Larson of Jamestown in the top event of 4 double windup ,which also includes Billy Norton of Fargo opposed to Steve Cook of Minneapolis, recom mended by Jimmy Potts and one of the aces of Potts’ famous gymnas ium. Both bouts are for six rounds. All four fighters are welterweights. Wood Faces Sulivan Sonny Wood and Bob Sullivan, both of Fargo, tangle in a four round lightweight bout. Joe Raik of Madison, Wis., and Christ Rein hart of Regan, N. C., meet in four rounds at 145 pounds. Pony Wil liams of Moline, Ill., and Louis Raik, also of Madison, Wis., clash in four rounds at 155 pounds. Kossick plans one additional fracas to be announced early next week. Admission prices for the cards during the 1934-35 season will be 50 cents general admission and 75 cents for reserved seats. Kossick will share the referee’s duties with Spud Murphy, former lightweight standout. Expect Big Crowd Kalbrener’s presence on the card is expected to draw a capacity crowd for the season’s opener, Max, under the management of Mike Ferrazzo of St. Paul, has made a distinct success of his preliminary bouts in Twin City arenas. He be came a favorite when he decisively defeated Louis Walker, tough St. Paul puncher, early this fall. Walk er had compiled a string of victories which had him on the verge of en tering the featured event class when Max administered him a sound boxing lesson. Larson, Kossick believes, is a ca pable opponent for Kalbrener. The young Jamestown gladiator has met with outstanding success in his North Dakota appearance. Cook is rated highly by Jimmy Potts who is sending his standout to Fargo with hopes of landing an agreement to furnish boxers for fu ture Elks cards Norton is a veter an well known to local fans.
