Benjamin Chafe the Vic tim This Time. NOTHER drowning accident oc curred at the Municipal Basin last night at about 9.30. ‘The victim this time is Benjamin Chafe, of Rossiter’s Lane, aged fifty-six years, married, and leaving a wife and thhree children. He had left his house only a few minutes previously, and must have been going down to the lavatory at the Kazin, when he stumbled and fel over the breastwork into the water.The first person who heard the cries of the drowning man was Mr. Geo. Payne, who was on board the sear. Guerilla at the Basin. He called Capt. May, of the said achoener, and as quickly as possible they jumped into a boat and pulled to the place from where the cries came. Messrs. M. Galway,l. Grant, and 8. Angel also heard the cries of The Drowning Man, and ran and jumped into a boat; but as she was tied to the landing with a chain they could not get her clear. They threw a rope, but it was not grasped by the man in the water. Meantime Capt. May and George Payne had reached the victim. ‘They pulled him on board, and as life did not appear to be extinct they made all possible haste to ue shore. ‘The body was taken to Mr. Grant's shop and a doctor sent for. But by the time Dr. Harvey arrived the last spark of life had fled. For a long time the corpse lay un identified. It was conveyed to the morgue at 10.30 welock, and was there recogniz ed by John Taylor, G.
