The annual Thanksgiving Day meal at St. Joseph’s wouldn’t be the same without them.When Butch Wehr first organized the annual Thanksgiving Day dinner at St. Joseph the Worker Church, he had a plan.Get out quickly and never look back.Nine years later, Wehr is still carvingup a day of food and fun for hundreds of Lawrence County residents.“When we started, we said we’ll do it for three or four years and we’ll try to find someone else to do it,” the 45-year-old Shenango Township native said. “But nobody really responded to do it.“Every year I say this is the last year we’ll (have the dinner) and then I’ll be walking downtown and I’ll see an elderly woman and she’ll say, ‘Oh, are you still having that Thanksgiving dinner?’ And it makes me melt and I say we can’t stop, and end up doing it again.”In 1986, Wehr and two of his friends, Joanne Pelletier and Wayne Alexander, learned that a local business would no longerPlease see DINNER, page 8By Vince AnazaloneNew Castle NewsThe United Way of Lawrence County has topped its fund-raising goal for 1995.Figures reported yesterday shdw the campaign has hit $702,937.The goal for the 1995 campaign was $700,000. As of the Oct. 22 meeting, the campaign had collected $511,292. Yesterday’s meeting showed the goal had been not only met but exceeded.Although most divisions were close to their projected goals, seven surpassed their expectations.The late John Perelman, who had been involved with the special events division, willed $5,000 to that category, putting the total at $19,000 - 146 percent of the$13,000 goal.The education division, headedby Marcia Anderson and Arthur Zarone, topped its goal of $16,000 with an extra $2,612, making 116 percent of its goal.Building trades surpassed its goal of $16,000 by $2,379. This included funds from the Phillips Place project, a United Way venture. In conjunction with businesses throughout New Castle, a home was rebuilt and sold to a needy family at a minimal cost. A slide show of before and after pictures was presented at the luncheon.Phillips Place was considered a great success by President Wayne Alexander and the board of directors. Condi Augustine of the building trades division said,“You should have seen the joy on the faces of the family when they arrived at the house. We helped them to purchase a home that otherwise they never would have been able to buy.” JExecutive Director Gayle M. Young said, “We are extremely satisfied with our final totals. Some of the older companies that were involved have closed and we worry about what to do to make up for that lost revenue.” The organization works through 17 divisions.In the fourth and final report meeting of the year, representatives from those divisions presented their contribution totals at a luncheon yesterday.In the other divisions, the final totals, goal and percentage of that goal reached, were : Advanced gifts - $16,914 raised, $22,000 goal, 77 percent.Major commercial - S156,8H2,$147,000, 107.Utilities - $77,000, $74,000, 104. Retail - $50,000, $51,000, 98. Professional - $27,291, $27,000, 101.Attorneys - $10,839, $15.000,72. Dentists - $4,170, $5,000, 83.
