By Robin Delaney City Editor Lee County is $271,903 richer thanks to a check from the Iowa Department of Transportation. County Engineer Dennis Osipowicz told the Lee County Board of Supervisors that a 1991 agreement between Lee County and the Iowa DOT included the state funding of labor for a list of approved projects. These projects were included in a Iowa 218 and U.S. 61 relocation agreement and included work on providing drainage extending north from the county home, providing an easement for an 18-inch storm sewer system and repairs some joints specified in the agreement, and resurfacing. “This agreement called for the state to either fund the cost of these items or to do the actual work,” Osipowicz told super visors at the regular board meet ing Tuesday evening in Fort Madison. “In this case, they have completed everything except the resurfacing.” The total estimated cost of the work was $445,000. Osipowicz said he received a check from the Iowa DOT for $271,903 for the resurfacing. “In effect, they are paying us to do it, which is really even better,’’ Osipowicz said. “Ambrosia Lane or 300th Street now is just a mile away and we'll be doing that next summer. We can just tie that in at the same time. Supervisors also approved ap pointments in the Lee County At torney’s Office, however salaries and part-time or fulltime status have yet to be determined. “We want to appoint them at this time, but will some be part time or fulltime? We don’t know yet,” explained Supervisor Tracy Vance. “All we’re doing here is approving the appointments. We're to meet with Mike Short (newly elected Lee County attor ney) to discuss the department. Salaries and hours can be ap proved when we review the ac tual employment contracts.” Bruce McDonald, Dave Andrusyk and Gordon Liles were appointed as assistant county at torneys. Fort Madison Attorney John Wright resigned from the office prompting Short to recom mend at the last supervisor's meeting that all three apoint ments be made fulltime posi tions. Short is to meet with su pervisors to discuss an additional $15,000 he believes will be neces sary for adjustment in salaries and benefits for the deputies.
