Plan December openingSalem library progressesBy MICHAEL PALECEK Staff WriterSALEM — ‘‘This library is something we are all going to be proud of,” said Salem Community Library president James Lonergan Wednesday. ‘‘I have the feeling we have a lot of enthusiasm and have made a lot of progress.”If having about 10,000 books with more volumes coming in daily by the box-fulls, 20 volunteers, and over $1,000 in funds in less than four months means enthusiasm and progress, Lonergan's comments to the library board Wednesday night were correct. The board discussed opening the library at the Salem Consolidated Grade School sometime in December. They will meet on Nov. 24 at 7 p.m. to set a date for the grand opening.Preparations for the opening include picking up donated books, sorting and cataloging the books, building shelves, and buying new books and magazines.Lonergan said more help is needed to staff the library and begin work on special projects including shut-in service and book discussion groups. He said he hopes that some elderly members of the community will be among the volunteers. The board is setting up a committee to sort and catalog books.Cataloging can begin as early as Nov. 26 when bookshelves will be installed in the adult section of the library, said James Pace,Salem School business manager. The board discussed issuing library cards at the public opening.Lonergan said that at the next board meeting, the committee will discuss requirements for non-district persons who wish to join the library. Salem has earmarked $1,000 for library use for residents. The board voted Jo spend $500 for new books which Pace said he will order immediately.
