GOSHEN—Nine top county offi cers were given salary increases ranging up to $3,000 while ten lesser officers and deputies got raises as high as $780. In measures taken by the Board of Supervisors yesterday, The raises, many of them re quested months ago, were recom mended by the Rules Committee and passed without dissent. The biggest ones were grouped in a local law, which will not be finally adopted until after a public hear ing scheduled for Dec. 4. Following are the salary changes, with the names of the officers who will receive them: County Highway Superintendent Earl Dickerson, from $7,500 to $10, 500; County Attorney Thomas R. Hadaway, from $10,500 to $12,500; County Clerk Albert E. Gottschalk, District Attorney Abraham S. Is seks and County Treasurer Joseph W. R. Dally, all from $7,500 to [ $9,500; Public Welfare Commissioner Jerome A. Simon and Sheriff George C. Bullis, from $6,000 to $7,000; Elec tion Commissioners William V. Kain and Frank R. Pikul, $4,628 to $5,000; Special County Judge-elect John W. Sweeney, of Washingtonville, $2,500 to $3,000, and Special Surrogate Charles C. Coleman, $1,000 to $1,200. All these changes were in a pro posed local law, to take effect Jan. 1 after the public hearing. A per missive referendum is provided by law, but only if petitioned by five percent of the electorate within 30 days after the hearing. These raises were in Acts which became law: County Planning Director Carl J. Mays, from $7,500 to $8500; Princ ipal Engineer Alfred H. Peteraga, from $7,000 to $8,500; Deputy Coun ty Treasurer Katharine M. Dughi, Deputy Welfare Commissioner John Sweeney of Goshen and Deputy County Clerk Ira L. Wallace, all from $5,304 to $6,084. Also, Veterans Service Agency Director Theodore G. Newman, from $5,070 to $5,850; Motor Vehicle Bureau Director George Hess, from a maximum of $4,966 to a maximum of $5,226; Deputy Veterans Agency Directors Douglas V. Reynolds and William L. Race, from $3,874 (fixed) to a maximum of $4,290, and Dep uty Board Clerk Mary. Earle, from a maximum of $4,082 to a maximum of $4,420. All but Miss Dughi's increase were made effective Jani;hers will take effect immediately. Miss Dughi was credited by other county em ployes with leading a successful campaign for increases for herself and other deputies. In addition to the raises, the board created yesterday two new positions of jailer and ordered the sum of $6,552 placed in the budget to pay them; this was seen as the first step toward the placing of the jail help on a five-day week. Other changes voted were: The job of supervising jailer at Goshen was eliminated and a jailer cook created, the latter with a salary range of $3,484 to $3,744, effective immediately; the position of typist in the Court Clerk’s office was upgraded to senior typist, at a range of $2,938 to $3,198, and the salary of the physicians for the two jails was fixed at $500, an increase of $200. A proposed schedule of increases for certain positions at the County Welfare Home was offered, but was not seconded. Rules Committee Chairman Graber explained that Welfare Commissioner Simon wish ed to re-study the salary scale at the home.
