COLLEGE STATION (Splh— Five Faculty Distinguished Achievement Awards of $500 each were presented Tuesday afternoon during ceremonies held in Gufon Hall at Texas AM College. The awards, established this year by the Association of For mer Students through its Tex as AM Development Fund, went to Travis J. Parker, pro fessor of geology; Robert L. Skrabanek, associate professor of rural sociology; Fred E. Ek felt, professor of English; Wayne D. Hall, professor of plant physiology; and Walton D. (Pete) Hardesty, business manager of student activities. Nominations were submitted by faculty and students and se lections were made by a facul ty committee. Parker, Ekfelt and Skraba nek were selected through teaching achievements; Hall through the field of research, and Hardesty through his coop eration with the students in their extra - curricular func tions. Dr. David H. Morgan, presi dent of the college, presided at the ceremonies. W. L. Ballard of Longview, president of the Association of Former Students, made the presentation and Q. T. Hotchkiss, immediate past pres ident of the AFS, explained the program. Parker's nomination read ‘His ability to interest his stu dents in his subject and hold their interest throughout the term, while giving them a sound basis for their subse quent courses in Geology is outstanding. In his field courses in Geology, he has lived with his students under conditions that require discipline, tact, and untiring efforts and has earned their high respect and admiration.” Skrabanek’s Dean said “He is the young man who took over a course which was in distress, made the boys like it, made them feel that they were get ting a lot out of it, and at the same time did not permit it to become a ‘grade point’ course.” Ekfelts nomination stated “He holds his students to high requirements and at the same time stimulates them to extra work. He has a rare capacity of attracting students to personal conferences. Seldom is there found a professor who takes the extreme interest in his own field while at the same time maintaining an all - around in terest in the knowledge that he feels is necessary to the stu dents.” Hall was selected because his work is “recognized as the highest type of practical exper iments. His interests revolve chiefly about the effects of ma jor environmental influences, such as temperature, light, and water, on the growth and re production of crop plants. He is (See AWARDS Page 6)
